Parco Faunistico di Piano dell’Abatino is currently looking for 2 volunteers that will support the staff members in their animal shelter for local and exotic animals.

The main activity of the shelter is the recovery of wild animals saved from vivisection labs and wild animals injured by hunters or other human activities. The shelter has been providing refuge and animal care since 1980. At the moment it gives hospitality to about 400 animals, belonging to several species of mammalians, birds and reptiles. Among mammalians, there are several monkeys species, deers, alpacas, lamas, raccoons and lynxes. Among birds, there are pelicans, parrots, cranes and several species of birds of prey. The shelter acts as a rescue and recovery center for local fauna. In this line, their main goal is to release those animals in the wild. The shelter is also specialized is exotic animals: it’s a sanctuary for more than 100 primates from different species. Finally, Giardino Faunistico di Piano dell’Abatino is also a research centre about primate behaviour.

The volunteer will support the staff members in the following tasks:

  • Preparation and delivery of food
  • Observations of animals and recording of relevant information
  • Cleaning animal areas
  • Maintenance and adjustment of existing enrichment programs

Volunteers will work 35 hours a week with two consecutive free days per week (not always Saturday and Sunday).

Food and accommodation will be covered by the European Commission; volunteers will have a health insurance, travel reimbursement (up until 275 € until 1999 km distance, up to 360 € for more), pocket money (5 euro per day) and an Italian language course.

The two volunteers will be accommodated in a house located at 10 minutes walking distance from the shelter, on a wonderful hill covered by olive trees. They can cook their own meals. Volunteers will share a double bedroom. The house has living room/kitchen, one double bedroom, one toilet with shower, wi-fi, washing machine.
