Germany EVS European Solidarity Corps Project in Berlin-Wannsee

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

The bilingual Montessori Kinderhaus at Wannsee is part of the campus of the International Montessori School (IMS). Around 30 children between the ages of two and six come here every day. Children take part in a German-English-speaking environment. The team consists of international staff with different mother tongues. Thus the children are in constant contact with native speakers and are so playfully introduced into foreign languages. The volunteers accompany the teachers and educators in their daily work. Typical tasks of volunteers can be: – Caretaking of the children – Supervising children and accompanying them while they play, reading books to them – Accompanying events or excursions to the forest, sports hall or other places – Initiating little projects with the children – Accompanying the morning or lunch circle – Initiating little projects with the children – Kitchen work (e.g. washing up after meals together, preparing meals)

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

Accomodation is provided in a single appartment with bathroom and kitchen in the district “Berlin Wannsee” close to the Kinderhaus. The travel to the city center might be up to one hour by train, because Berlin is a large city. You will be provided with a monthly ticket for local public transport. You will receive a monthly payment for grocery shopping and a monthly pocket money in the amount of 150 €.

TRAINING DURING THE ACTIVITY

The volunteers will receive at least one German language course and additionally the online language course via the OLS system. The volunteers get the possibility to take part in the meetings of the team and will also have meetings only with the tutor on a regular basis. For the service in this oganisation it is necessary that the volunteers have a training in food hygiene. It will be conducted by the local health office.

PARTICIPANT PROFILE

The motivation of the volunteer to do a voluntary service and work with children is the most important criteria in selecting the volunteers. Other criteria might be: – very good English language skills (B2/C1), since the children are bilingual – basic knowledge of the German language is an advantage, but no must – desirable: initial experience in the field of education – creative, technical, sports and/or musical skills.
