Sweden ESC European Solidarity Corps

Sweden ESC European Solidarity Corps The Mustard Seed Project is a volunteer initiative to cultivate community, solidarity and peace in our city. Volunteers in our project will join together in the life and community of our church (EFS church in Lulea) striving together to create a community of hospitality for all people. Our work is based on the life and teachings of Jesus and we want to communicate God´s love to everyone we meet. The Mustard Seed Project includes three main themes of work: 1. Hospitality for people living on the margins of society that come to our soup kitchen, 2. Gardening – raising organic and locally grown food to serve at our meals, 3. Youth outreach – building relationships with teenagers in our youth group. The work will be both social (welcoming and interacting with people of all different backgrounds and ages and helping to create a space of welcome) as well as practical (preparing meals, organizing donations, harvesting and preserving food, dishwashing and cleaning).

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

Volunteers will live together in a common house next to an established Christian community made up of about ten other members of our organisation that shares meals, chores, garden work and prayer together. Each volunteer will have their own room but will share toilet, living room and kitchen. Volunteers will be encouraged to participate in the rhythms of the community. Food, local transportation, language learning, and pocket money will be provided according to the program rules. Volunteers will engage in project activities between 30-38 hours a week and have 2 vacation days per month.

TRAINING DURING THE ACTIVITY

Volunteers will be given formal training in topics such as how to interact with vulnerable group in our society, conflict resolution as well as environmental care and gardening practices. They will also gain experience through informal learning as they engage in the activities of our organisation. Volunteers will participate in a leadership course for youth which teaches skills needed for youth ministry such as leading discussions and presentations, team-building and spiritual development. Volunteers will also be given space for both personal and group reflection, and mentorship.

PARTICIPANT PROFILE

We are looking for young people between the ages of 18-30 that share our passion for a world transformed by love and compassion. We are hoping to find volunteers that share our faith in Jesus and want to share Jesus´ love with others, and who care about both social justice and environmental justice. You should be able to take initiative, see the needs that are present and take action to meet them, without always needing to be told what needs to be done. We are looking for creative volunteers that are open to learning new things but also aren´t afraid to share ideas of how to improve our work.
